Conversations with Young Jamaicans (CYJ) is an initiative of the Office of the Political Ombudsman (OPO) since 2016. The initiative’s target group is students of Secondary and Tertiary Institutions, sixteen years old and over.
At the Town Hall styled meetings, the Political Ombudsman provides information on the role and function of the Office of the Political Ombudsman to include the Political Ombudsman (Interim) Act, 2002, and the Agreement and Declaration on Political Conduct (the Code) of 2005. Participation is encouraged in open guided discussions on issues of concern in politics related to Democracy, Good Governance, Human Rights and the Rule of Law.
The main objectives of the CYJ are:
• To enable the OPO to better understand the reach and relevance of Jamaica’s standards for political conduct;
• To enable young people to raise questions and issues, make suggestions and observations to better inform the actions of the OPO;
• To improve understanding of young people’s needs, relative to communication by state actors;
• To discuss and better utilize social media in the context of the tenets of the Code.
